Challenges and Solution

The food industry is facing a crisis of confidence over the issue of food safety, purity and provenance. This is particularly true in the Muslim community where consumers are very concerned about compliance with Islamic religious requirements for the products and services they are purchasing.

The existing procedures for halal compliance, traceability and food safety provenance are largely unworkable. The problem is not one of installing new processes within the supply chain, such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), or best practices such as Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), or Good Distribution Practice (GDP). Rather, it is how to capture the critical information from these processes in a single traceability information flow, with the goals of providing safer food, simplifying product recall, removing duplication of data, and being able to identify the risk areas within the supply chain.

Unfortunately, the major problem is that the critical information embedded within the supply chain is largely inaccessible since there are no effective methods for tracing the entire life cycle of a product from farm to table. Traditional paper-based documentary records are too slow and inaccurate and do not provide seamless information flow throughout the supply chain.

OpsSmart® software was developed to address the global food safety and quality concerns. OpsSmart® traces food across the entire supply chain from the farm to the fork. OpsSmart® traces all types of food (poultry, beef, seafood, rice, grains, produce and processed foods). The supply chain information maintained within the OpsSmart® central repository comprises, but is not limited to such properties as; parent stock, feed, vaccinations, pesticides, health inspections, veterinarian reports, Halal certificates, HACCP processes, origin and all other relevant information from the farm all the way through to further processing.
